History of Mount Laurel Mount Laurel Township and Local GovernmentMount Laurel EducationMount Laurel Public ServicesThe earliest known inhabitants of the land were the Lenni-Lenape Indians who occupied most of this region. Evidence shows their presence from about 1400's to mid-1700. The "Great Road" of the pioneer days, now known as Hainesport - Mt. Laurel Road, first began as an Indian trail. In 1682, the Evans family settled along the Rancocas Creek. One of the three sons, William Evans, who was named after his father, purchased 300 acres at the "Site of the Mount", called Mt. Pray, which was later named Mount Laurel. The deed is the earliest real estate transaction recorded in the township. In 1698, William donated an acre of land to the Society of Friends. The Friends Meeting house was built using the sandstone quarried from the mount. It is the oldest meetinghouse in the country and is still used today. More on the history of mount laurel homes.
