A little history about Mount Laurel
The earliest known inhabitants of the land were the Lenni- Lenape Indians who occupied most of this region. From the evidence found they were dated to have been in the area from the 1400’s to mid 1700’s. The "Great Road" of the pioneer days, now known as Hainesport - Mt. Laurel Rd, first began as an indian trail.
In 1682, the Evans family settled along the Rancocas Creek. One of the three sons, William Evans who was named after his father, played a significant role in the settlement of Mount Laurel. William purchased 300 acres at the "Site of the Mount", called Mt. Pray, which was later to be named Mount Laurel, at the intersection of Hainesport - Mount Laurel Rd. and Moorestown Mt. Laurel Roads. The deed is the earliest real estate transaction recorded in the Township.
In 1698, William donated an acre of land to the Society of Friends. The Friends Meeting house was built using the sandstone quaried from the mount. It is the oldest Meeting house in the country and is still in use today. |
